After use, always ensure sheepskin dries naturally before storing. Therefore, do not fold/pack away while wet/sweaty. If sheepskin is stored while damp or wet, it will react and generate an accelerated breakdown of the sheepskin fibres.
Sheepskin/Wool should be brushed out frequently, to avoid the sweat drying and clumping the fibres together. Furthermore, when dry, before reusing, brush the wool to remove horsehair, dried sweat and dirt residue. This assures a longer life of the product, it also saves you a lot of problems.
To allow the sheepskin to stabilise, always ensure it has dried completely between uses.
How to wash sheepskin?
Sheepskin products should always be hand washed in cold or warm water (less than 30c). You may add a mild soap designed for sheepskin.
Please note, regular washing powders should be avoided as most contain enzymes or bleach. These enzymes break down the sheepskins very quickly.
Do not wash sheepskin in washing machines that have an agitator, as these more often than not, damage the quality of sheepskin. Furthermore, it is also recommended that if you opt to wash your sheepskin in the washing machine rather than the above recommended hand wash, you should use a washing bag.
Remove any excess water by carefully squeezing the water out. Do not wring out out as it may result in damaging the product. Do not dry in a dryer or near a heating device. You may dry sheepskin in a dryer, but only on a cold setting.
Ideally sheepskin products should be line dried out of the sun.
